How are you feeling today?  If you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed by everything that’s happening, you don’t have to pretend that everything is ok.

I’m right here with you.  We’re in this together.

Yesterday, I deliberately chose not to look at social media because I knew that the only thing I can do to gain control, at this time, is to manage my own mind and emotions.

I gave myself permission to connect with myself.

I needed to give myself space and time to process my anxiety and to stop overthinking.  If I continued to indulge and listen to my fears, I would’ve shut down and did nothing.

If I didn’t manage my own mind and emotions,  I wouldn’t be able to show up at my best for you or for the people I care about most.

You see, it’s always been my nature to be the strong one during difficult times.  When my grandfather had colon cancer, I was the one to help him to the bathroom. When my stepmother died, I was the one to do the eulogy.

THE PROBLEM

At the time, I believed in a little white lie - “If I am strong for them then that means I’m strong.”  It sounds like a nice thought, but it didn't serve me or anyone else.

THE TRUTH

Watching my grandfather slowly deteriorate was eating away at me.  For months after my stepmom passed, I was distraught with guilt.

Sure, I may have been strong for my family at the time, but I was suffering inside.  I was a wreck after - I was mentally and emotionally exhausted. My health suffered, I was feeling frustrated and my loved ones took the brunt of it.

THE SOLUTION

The difference between now and then, is that now I can catch myself when I start to pretend to be strong.  I recognize that pretending to be strong is only one of my fear responses and that it doesn’t help anyone in the long run.

Now, I know when I need to take time out to connect with myself so that I can show up and be genuinely strong.

There are 2 choices you can make:
  1. Put up a front now, drain your energy and suffer later.
  2. Allow yourself to process the discomfort now, regain your energy and show up as your true and best self for the long run.

Both choices feel uncomfortable.

The first choice leads you to long-term discomfort and feeling unhappy with yourself long-term.  The second choice leads you to short-term discomfort and feeling good about yourself long-term.

Genuine strength feels powerful because it comes from within.

You cannot truly feel good about yourself if you’re helping others from an inauthentic place.

When you take the time to PAUSE, ACKNOWLEDGE and PROCESS your emotions, you can move through them faster.

Are you going to pretend to be strong or
show up at your best right now?

The answer is to show up at your best right now.  Your loved ones can look to you as the example of genuine strength, right now.
